Freedom Force
It all started in space. A creature escaped from the clutches of an evil alien known as Lord Dominion. The creature's spaceship held many containers of a mysterious chemical known as Energy X. Lord Dominion's forces, hot on his tail, shot down his spacecraft over Earth, spilling the precious cargo all over the urban metropolis, Patriot City. The energy spreads to many people and gives them incredible power, usually based on their personality or situation.
The creature would eventually itself be energized and gain massive mental powers. An old man in a park, nearing his death bed, but still highly patriotic, sits on a bench. This man worked on the Manhattan Project, the secret project that ushered in the Atomic Age. He is still bitter after being expelled from the team, for accusing a fellow member of being a Communist. Miring in his memories, he notices a familiar man walking through the park. It's O'Connor, The man whom he had claimed to be a Communist spy! He notices O'Connor talking to a man in secret, looking as if they are making some sort of exchange. As they talk, the old man stumbles over and is noticed! The Communist spy shoots the old man, fulfilling an old urge. In his final moments, he notices a local park statue. It's a statue of the minuteman, a regular citizen fulfilling his duty when his country needed him! The statue is glowing, almost as if beckoning out to the old man. The old man reaches the statue and suddenly starts to feel a large burst of energy! He is slowly becoming younger and stronger! He gets up off the ground and swears to protect his country from enemies within and without. He becomes Minute Man!
Minute Man goes on to create a team with the alien, now known as Mentor, dedicated to stopping evil where ever it's slimy feet touch! They call their team Freedom Force! They fight many foes throughout the city and eventually even throughout other realms! They fight the froze red menace Nuclear Winter, the misunderstood Shadow, the doppelganger making Deja Vu, and even the master of time itself!
The game itself is rather old, but it's still a great game. It has recently been released with it's sequel on Steam, allowing new people to enjoy the game. It's got a great, campy, Silver-Age feel that makes it really fun to play. One of the best parts of the game is customization. One can make their own hero, with whatever powers offered by the game that they wish! Adding to this, the mod community is still fairly strong after all of these years, recreating heroes and villains from other licenses. It's incredibly fun, and a classic, so if you're looking for an old super hero game to play, definitely go for this one.
